Summary/ Reader Response Draft #1

The article "How an accidental discovery made this year could change the world." written by Lockett (2022), introduces the discovery of Lithium-sulfur(Li-S) batteries and their benefits with it. The Li-S batteries are cheaper to make, use environmentally friendly materials, can be three times lighter, and have a low chance of catching fire compared to lithium-ion(Li-ion) batteries, but Li-S batteries typically have around 1000 charge cycles. Hence, there is a need to increase its charge cycles. However, according to the author, researchers find it difficult to increase the charge cycle of Li-S batteries by changing compounds in the battery’s cathode. “The uncontrolled dendritic and lithium growth, as well as electrolyte decomposition inherent in lithium metal-based batteries, cause safety issues and low Coulombic efficiency.” as observed by Li et al (2015). This causes a shuttling effect on Li-S batteries, due to the dissolution of lithium-polysulfides formed when the battery

FORMAL LETTER OF INTRODUCTION

Dear Prof Brad, I'm using this opportunity to formally introduce myself, my name is Neo Quan Sheng. I'm a year 1 mechanical engineering student, who is attending your critical thinking and communicating module. I graduated from Temasek Polytechnic in 2020 with a diploma in mechatronics and moved on to national service for two years. After putting a considerable amount of time into thinking about the next step, I decided to enroll in the Singapore Institute of Technology's mechanical engineering. I found it interesting in the aerospace industry during my time at the polytechnic. However, my internship at ST Aerospace made me realize that it would be better for me to study something more generic. I would consider myself to be an introvert, which coincides with my weakness, having poor communication, however, my time in national service has improved my communication skills, as I was place in many situations where I have to initiate conversations, which allowed me to improve my

Critical Thinking: The Soul of Communication

After reading the excerpt, I found it interesting that the consequences of poor communication and misunderstanding between employees can cost a financial loss of US$37 Billion.  Critical thinking is one of the key factors in effective communication. The ability to think clearly and rationally, understanding the logical connection between ideas between two parties. To have good critical thinking skills is to be able to identify different arguments concerning a particular issue, using them to express with others through effective communication.  In a society, where a large group of the population is educated, not everyone can communicate effectively. I feel that it is important that effective communication is introduced to everyone at an earlier stage in life. For example, during pre-tertiary education, at this point, the individual will require to be able to communicate, be it in national service, tertiary education, or at work, having this skill will prevent the bulk of miscommunicatio
